Zipper –Can Can

Zipper –Can Can/Laugh Laugh –Sirocco SIR 6001 (1976 French issue)

This is one of the other Zipper bands, NOT to be confused with Atkins/Morris or Fred Cole!
For your entertainment, I haven’t compressed the picture, so if you click on the image you can see it in full wide dorkscope…The cover nearly gives Frog a run for its money, as for the track itself…er…Barrel-house Glam anyone?

Click on title for a soundclip of Can Can

Hi Thanks for getting in touch. I just got the Young Blood single and I can see a Buxton credit on the B side of that single (Streak Up And Down/ Funk 74). Can you tell us the line- up of the band? Involvement in any other acts/ records from the period? Any more pieces of the jigsaw very welcome!
I think I bought in on ebay, but knew the song for a while...
All the best
Robin

Hi there
Funk 74 was written by me Kevin Richardson with Stuart Buxton on vocals he also sings on the Can Can song but left the band before we released the record in France and the rest of Europe. He is therefore not on the picture sleeve. We had a deal with Radio Luxembourg and featured on an early top of the pops which was on rtl tv where we recorded an early video at the Chateau Studios in Luxembourg. We then toured Germany where we had a 3 week residency at a club in Munich called the PN club and one night the manager said you have tonight off as we have an Australian band coming in to play they were called AC/DC Wow what a night that was they went on as you know to be mega i have met up with the band since and remembered the good old days many tales to tell i will post more info if you like when my memory enables me to cheers Kevin

The line up of the band was me on guitar Bob Skivington on Bass, Martin Warboys on Keyboards known as Bruce,Graham on Drums cant remember his last name,After this finished i played guitar with White Plains with the original guitarist Robin Box who was not touring who allowed us to go out as White Plains and this gave us a good income , i dig up more info later oh the Streak up and down thing came about because of us knowing the original writer of Leap up and down Keith i think his name was who let us record this cheesy number because streaking was all the rave at this time, his band was St Cecilia .The Can Can Single was recorded at CBS studios in London i remember Mott the Hoople were next door in the big Studio cheers for now

Hey Kevin
Thank you so much for the insight! I also recorded in the smaller CBS studio 3-4 years later, it was a pretty good studio all the same..
Do you consider Stuart lucky not to have been on the cover??!! Can Can aslo come out in Spain, but using a different photo.
All the best
Robin

Hi, I'm Stuart Buxton and i am really glad I wasn't on that cover! I did enjoy recording in the studios i thought that was great and when we made the video in Germany for Laugh Laugh I wasn't sure of the words so i had to bluff my way through it! I don't know how it turned out, i'd love to see it if anybodys go it? If Kev reads this, please get intouch stuartabuxton@btinternet.com We had some good times and some bad times in Zipper, but i wouldn't have missed them for the world. many thanks Stuart Buxton

Hi There,
I'm Keith Hancock, writer of 'Leap Up & Down'.
After my band St. Cecilia split in 1972, I went to work for an Agency in Lincolnshire, and that's how I met the lads from Zipper. They were a great band, and I decided that they might make the song a hit again if we changed the lyrics to cash in on the streaking craze. I don't think the lads were that keen to record the song, but, hey, if you don't buy a ticket you don't win the raffle!!
I'm still writing, and have a song with Willie Nelson at the moment.
Regards,
Keith
